OVERVIEW
In April 2020 we began replacing 1.6km of three-phase underground electricity cabling connected to Powerco’s Baird Rd substation in Tokoroa.
The work, scheduled for late 2020, was fast-tracked after one phase of the existing cable –installed in the 1970s –had a number of failures.
Installation of the cable to replace the faulty phase was completed in May. The second and third-phase cables were installed over May andJune.
The new cable has increased the capacity to meet growing energy demand in Tokoroa. We’ll also be installing a new underground cable between our Baird Rd and Putaruru substations to further increase capacity and provide security of supply to both towns.

The challenge
Growing energy demand in Tokoroa, and existing underground cables reaching capacity, and end of life.
The solution
Replace the three phase cable with new cabling – both renewing the asset and increasing capacity of supply
What this Means
Trench and duct 1.6km of three-phase cabling from Tokoroa’s Whakauru St Substation to the Baird Rd Substation.
Milestones
Trenching and ducting for the new cables
Installation of cable to replace faulty phase
Installation of second and third phase cables
Installation of 11kV cable from Baird Rd to Putaruru

FAQ
We strive to minimise impact in the design and placement of network infrastructure and we’re still planning and consulting on the route for the new circuit. The circuit will be a mix of overhead lines – which you will see, and underground cable – which you won’t see. You’ll also see a new building at our Putaruru substation, replacing the ageing existing building there.
