OVERVIEW
Keeping the electricity flowing to key infrastructure is important for the communities we serve.
That’s why we’re working to assess and modernise the assets supplying the rural primary schools across our network.
Primary schools are a focal point for rural communities. They’re used not only to teach our tamariki, but also as Civil Defence emergency centres, polling places, and to hold community events.
That’s why having safe, reliable supply to those facilities is so important.
In the January 2021 school holidays our contractors were hard at work upgrading the assets across 12 schools in the Taranaki region. All rural primaries in the region were assessed and work was carried out as needed to modernise equipment. Work ranged from replacing poles, lines and cross-arms, to some undergrounding.
Work was conducted in the holidays to minimise disruption.
Work will be taking place in Whanganui later in 2021, Wairarapa in 2022 and work for the other regions in our network is in the planning stages.

FAQ
We strive to minimise impact in the design and placement of network infrastructure and we’re still planning and consulting on the route for the new circuit. The circuit will be a mix of overhead lines – which you will see, and underground cable – which you won’t see. You’ll also see a new building at our Putaruru substation, replacing the ageing existing building there.
